Protecting Umstead State Park

Are you aware of the environmental and health hazards created by Wake Stone Quarry? I’ve measured high levels of quarry air pollution on my bike rides around the quarry using a personal Plume Flow Monitor. I suffered a painful skin reaction as a result to my exposure to PM2.5. I’ve taken pictures in Umstead State Park downstream of the quarry that are milky white because of the lack of sediment and runoff controls.

To understand the physical hazards, go for a walk or bike ride on the East Coast Greenway thru Umstead and imagine sharing the multi-use trail, or the dangerous single lane bridge over Crabtree Creek with logging trucks.

If preserved, this forested land with steep terrain and trails will provide adventure and enjoyment to over 2 million annual visitors of Umstead State Park.

Please, do your part to protect Umstead State Park, the East Coast Greenway and Crabtree Creek. Contact Raleigh City Council, or your local or state representatives and ask them to stop the quarry.
